The 5 best point guards in NBA history

It is time for another blog series, and this time we will be looking at the best 5 all-time NBA players at each position. We will begin with what many consider to be a cornerstone for a team’s success – the point guards. After all, there is a reason why elite players from this group are labeled as floor generals and point gods!

Before we get to the list, it’s good to point out that it is nearly impossible to boil things down to pure numbers and objective parameters. This means that there will be subjective opinions from our team members and we would certainly like to hear your opinions in the comment sections of our social media channels!

5. Gary Payton

Even though PGs are primarily praised for their skills on offense, we are starting the list with a defensive mastermind who is the first point guard ever in the history of the NBA to win the Defensive player of the year award (the only other being Marcus Smart). His other achievements include:

  • NBA champion with the Miami Heat in 2006
  • 9 time All-Star
  • 9 time All-NBA team member
  • 9 time NBA All-Defensive First Team
  • 2 time Olympic gold medalist
  • member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team

Obviously, all of this implies that “the Glove” was much more than a ball-hawk and lockdown defender. His playmaking repertoire was on full display during the glory days of the Seattle SuperSonics when he and Shawn Kemp connected for some of the most glorious alley oops of all time.

4. Jason Kidd

Before triple doubles became a nightly occurrence in the Association, and long after Oscar Robertson had the first ever triple double average for the 1961–62 season, JKidd was a beast in this category. He finished his career with a total of 107 of them, which at this time is good for 4th place on the all-time leaders list.

However, LeBron James and Nikola Jokić are right behind him, and we know what that will mean for his position on this list. Still, Kidd had an awesome NBA career highlighted by the miraculous 2011 championship run with the Dallas Mavericks and two Olympic gold medals. He is still very much in the game as the head coach of the Mavs. Before assuming this role, he was an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers and won the title with them in 2020.

3. John Stockton

The only player from this list without a championship ring, but for him it might be best to simply highlight two mind blowing facts:

  • all-time NBA assists leader
  • all-time NBA steals leader

Not only are these some pretty much key stats for point guards, but the “mind blowing” part is that he is so far ahead of the competition that the Utah Jazz legend will probably never be knocked off from this throne. Finally, here is one more unbelievable piece of information. He missed only 22 games in his 19-season career!

2. Magic Johnson

To avoid making this blog too long, we will skip all the numerous accolades and trophies he started collecting ever since he was in high school and then all the way to LA, so we will simply share this amazing video. If our younger fans are interested in learning more just hit the search engine with the term Showtime Lakers.

1. Steph Curry

As fans we can truly feel blessed for the ability to witness how he revolutionized the game and became the main factor in creating the Golden State Warriors dynasty. Again, listing accolades might be superfluous, especially since “the Chef” will certainly add a few more chapters to his miraculous career.

Perhaps the number one spot is the most controversial here since many consider that Steph is not a true point guard, so we would definitely love to hear what you think about him and the entire list!
